ANNE MARIE PHELAN

Vocal & Violin

Anne Marie's musical journey began in west Limerick at the age of five when she began playing violin and piano. It was the start of a life long affair with music. Her devotion and dedication took her to the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin where she continued her studies and received her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music Performance on the violin.
Wanting to spread her wings, Anne moved to Chicago with the help of a Fulbright scholarship and a place at Northern Illinois University.
On her return to Ireland, she landed a job in a principal role with the RTE Concert Orchestra, which sees her working on TV, radio, film music and with a diverse range of international artists such as Placido Domingo, Michel Legrand, Marvin Hamlish and John Lord.
During this time, Anne Marie's deep innate passion and love for music of the 20s/30s/40s began emerging. She discovered something else. A voice. A voice she never knew she had. She began singing, and a thrilling new world opened up to her. Captivated by songs of the war time era, she had a latent desire to sing them. She discovered the beauty of French chanson inspired by the likes of Joséphine Baker, Lucienne Boyer and Léo Marjane, reflecting an era and a way of life and living. In a beautiful journey through music she explored the 'Hot Club' jazz and gypsy swing of Paris, with the spirit of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli, and onwards she continued through to the great genres of jazz and blues with massive influences from the remarkable ladies of jazz,  notably Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Eva Cassidy's soulful jazz alley interpretations.
Anne Marie's vocals and expressive violin compliment each other and give a unique liberating feel to this beautiful and celebrated music.
Come hear her. Anne Marie is 'Félann'.
